What on Earth is Earth Day? And why does it matter to me?
Earth Day is a global movement for climate change. Now more than ever individuals are making concerted efforts to slow the climate crisis. Things like carbon footprint, emissions, plastic use, stock grazing and over fishing are real problems that affect our Earth every single day.
We must restore our Earth not just because we care about the natural world, but because we live on it. Every one of us needs a healthy Earth to support our jobs, livelihoods, health & survival, and happiness. A healthy planet is not an option — it is a necessity.
Although it has recently been suggested as a climate emergency, It's not all doom and gloom! There are things that can be done to help the Earth, so why not start on Earth Day?
You don't have to “give up” or change everything all at once, just make a conscious decision to change something in your life, for the greater good!
Here are 3 top tips from Harris&Rose @its_the_green_queen to help your world on Earth Day:
1. Shop Sustainably
There are many companies that don't just pretend to be green, (known as greenwashing) they are actually green! From low carbon footprint, plastic free and sustainable cruelty free products. Here at Harris&Rose we offer those products you are looking for - take a look at my instagram @its_the_green_queen for hints, tips and ideas. We have everything from sustainable toilet brushes to reusable makeup pads, plastic free safety razors, toxic free cleaning products and the new toilet bombs!
2. Compost your food
Food in general waste bins goes straight to landfill. This breaks down very slowly, releasing methane (a potent greenhouse gas) and carbon dioxide. It can take 30 years for landfill to release all the methane. This also wastes valuable nutrients - a quarter of all food produced in the world ends up in landfill! Composting, on the other hand, recycles those nutrients and improves soil health and can even be used to make electricity. Home composters are available in so many high street shops now and you can get biodegradable food waste bags from Harris&Rose. Then you can just pop the bag in your food waste collection and go again!
3. Meat free Days
Reducing consumption of meat and fish will help curtail the production of greenhouse gases that drive this climate emergency. It also helps lessen the demand for precious environmental resources such as land, water, and energy.
Our planet is heating up. By replacing meat and fish with other sources of protein, (nuts, seeds, beans and lentils, for example), we can reduce carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions. There’s now so much evidence to show that what is good for the planet is also good for you, they go hand in hand! Win Win!
So, if you’re wondering how to take part in Earth Day, these three simple things are a big step in the right direction. Best of all, you don’t need to wait until next April to do it all again. This is all about making every day Earth Day.
It’s small steps to a brighter future.
Much eco Love,
